On Magnitude Limits for Point Source Detections
نویسنده
چکیده
The notion of magnitude limits is formalized as a compromise between incompleteness and spurious detections. The best possible detection performance for given signal-to-noise is then computed for diierent point spread functions and pixel sizes. The resulting theoretical magnitude limits are much shallower than simple 3 arguments would predict (and the reason for this is explained), but are (as expected) somewhat deeper than magnitude limits achieved in practice.

Evaluation of Source Counts and Upper Limits in Crowded Rosat Pspc Fields
We present a method for determining source counts, S/N, and upper limits at speciied positions in a crowded ROSAT PSPC eld using a combination of publicly available software packages. The algorithm is based on the so-called`Local DETECT' method of source detection, and improves upon currently available software, to permit a meaningful comparison of non-detections with detected sources. We also ...
متن کاملComparison of Electrochemical Immunosensors and Aptasensors for Detection of Small Organic Molecules in Environment, Food Safety, Clinical and Public Security
We review here the most frequently reported targets among the electrochemical immunosensors and aptasensors: antibiotics, bisphenol A, cocaine, ochratoxin A and estradiol. In each case, the immobilization procedures are described as well as the transduction schemes and the limits of detection. It is shown that limits of detections are generally two to three orders of magnitude lower for immunos...
متن کاملSimulation of artificial earthquake records using Point Source method with applying amplification effects
Today to design large hydraulic structures like dams, application of dynamic analysis in time domain seems very interesting due to its benefits. For applying such analysis, appropriate earthquake records that are compatible to site conditions are necessary for designer. Such information is rarely recorded for a dam site during an earthquake and usually the amount of recorded data is not suffici...
متن کاملObservational Constraints on Microwave Anisotropy from Point Sources
Applying basic physical principles to recent observational results, we derive upper and lower limits on microwave anisotropy from point sources over the range of frequencies 10-1000 GHz. We examine the level of noise in the observations as a possible indication of source confusion at subarcminute scales. We also derive an upper limit on microwave anisotropy caused by the sources responsible for...
متن کاملComputing flux upper-limits for non-detections
If a source is not detected above some flux threshold (when expected to be present at a target position), how can one assign a plausible upper limit to its flux such that (i) it has precise probabilistic meaning; (ii) has a degree of confidence that is not subjective or arbitrarily conservative; and (iii) has no dependence on any prior knowledge about the flux? Unfortunately, the astronomical l...
